During World War II, Pacific fighter ace, Captain Charles P. Sullivan, was flying a routine escort mission in New Guinea when one of the twin engines on his plane failed. Sullivan pulled away from the group to return to base. Flying alone, Sullivan was attacked by a Japanese fighter and took heavy damage to his remaining engine. With black smoke trailing from one engine, and white smoke streaming from the other, Sullivan crash landed in the jungle below, 500 miles from his home base. The jungle was oppressive as Sullivan made his way on foot. His head was injured from the crash, and he was running low on food and water. He sought help from the native people in the nearby mountains. Sullivan was fed by the natives, and believed that they would help him find his way home. The warm welcome came to an abrupt end. Sullivan was in enemy territory and the natives were working for the Japanese! They attacked him after a long standoff in a dark corner of a bamboo hut. Defending himself, Sullivan shot his way out of the village and escaped into the night, only to meet a native hunting party the next morning who was looking for him! For three weeks, Sullivan evaded the natives before discovering a friendly Australian unit working in the region. The Aussies had a radio that Sullivan used to send a brief message to his home base: 'Captain Charles Sullivan...arrived at this point. Injury slight...please advise.'
