Cirque Success! Sold Out Screening w/ Exec. Producer Pledger and Actor Massoglia

The Friday night screening of Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant was a huge success.  Following the film, Little Rock native and Executive Producer of the film, Courtney Pledger, and Actor and Star of the film, Chris Massoglia, were interviewed by the Arkansas Dem-Gazette Film Critic Philip Martin.  After an intriguing discussion on the process of making Cirque, Pledger and Massoglia ventured to Copeland’s where the sold out crowd followed them for drinks and appetizers.

Little Rock Film Fest Trailer

New short trailer from the amazing 2009 festival. How many people can you spot in the trailer? Are you yourself in there?

Happy Halloween: Costume Ideas

Today's the best holiday of the year other than the week of the film fest (LRFF day?). So on behalf of us at the LRFF enjoy yourselves tonight with movie themed halloween costumes. Here are some ideas:

Easily the best hands down idea. Yours Truly as Carol from Spike Jonze's Amazing Where the Wild Things Are.

Nothing's creepier than Dressing as Tommy Wiseau from The Room.

Never mind.
Okay. Scariest halloween costume ever? Could this be a still from the next film in the series, perhaps?
In honor of Jackie Earl Haley in the new Nightmare revamp.
You'll be the coolest at the party in this easy to do Shaun costume. Got a tie, cricket bat and shaved head and glasses? Done and done.

Us at cameras on the radio are having a Hitchcock themed party at Corey's house. I'll be going as Jimmy Stewart from Rear Window. Wheelchair and binoculars can't get much simpler.

Cameras on the Radio is everywhere

After almost two months of successful radio shows Cameras on the Radio is still going strong. Now we have a livestream account that will hopefully allow us to broadcast live with multiple cameras for special events and broadcasts where they have internet. In fact here's a message from a famous celebrity we shot at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival who urges you to watch not listen to the show:

So much to do, So much to see

Well to start off The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival is fast approaching and if you haven't gotten your tickets you should. Also of some note founders, Brent and Craig Renaud's film Warrior Champions screen Saturday October 17 and the following Sunday. You can check out the full schedule here.

Many wonderful films and workshops are going to be on display in Hot Springs so we encourage you to get a pass and see as much as possible.

Also interestingly LRFF alum Tim Jackson (Category One Entertainment) just gave us news that footage from their documentary, "Looking for Lurch" will be on an episode of Weird, True & Freaky on Animal Planet, Tuesday October 13 at 9pm. So set your TiVos. Also Tim and co-producer Josh Miller's film "Where's my close up, Mr. Thornton" won Best Southern Film and an audience award at the Secret City Film Festival in Tennessee. Congratulations guys.

And to kick off the Halloween season right Market Street Cinema is putting out some spooky fun screenings. The Room is back by popular demand October 24th at 9:30 pm and is being hosted by yours truly, Levi Agee of the Little Rock Film Festival. Expect spoons, roses, laughs and horror and the Citizen Kane of Bad Movies.

The next cult film to grace the screen is the one and only Rocky Horror Picture Show on Thursday 10/29 @ 7:30 & 9:30
Friday 10/30 @ 7:30 9:30 & 11:30

And of course don't forget the Vampire's Assistant with Courtney Pledger for the Arkansas Film Series event at the Rave Motion Picture theater and after party on October 23rd.

So everyone has a lot to do this month. We want to hear about what you are going to see.

Anvil to appear in Gondry's Green Hornet

Just got the news that our friends from Anvil are going to do a cameo in the upcoming comic book film Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen and directed by Michel Gondry. It looks like showing the documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil at the Little Rock Film Festival actually helped their careers. We'll be discussing more about this news on the Little Rock Film Festival presents radio show "Cameras on the Radio" this Sunday at 8pm on 88.3 fm kabf.org

Arkansas Film Series to show Vampire's Assistant

The Little Rock Film Festival has teamed up with the Arkansas and Little Rock Film Commissions to bring you the first in the Arkansas Film Series of screenings this year. The Vampire's Assistant is a very slick film from Courtney Pledger (Little Rock native) who Executive Produced the film. There will be a screening and after party to celebrate her accomplishments. Continue reading for the press release.

From Gary Newton (Little Rock Chamber of Commerce) of the Arkansas Film Series:

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, a new Universal Pictures feature film executive produced by Little Rock's Courtney Pledger, will begin its nationwide release on Friday, October 23rd.

To celebrate another accomplished Arkansan in film, Copeland's Famous New Orleans Restaurant and Bar will present the Arkansas Film Series, produced by the Little Rock Regional Chamber's Little Rock Film Commission, Arkansas Film Commission and Little Rock Film Festival. A special screening of Cirque Du Freak will begin at 7:00 pm at Rave Motion Pictures Colonel Glenn 18 Theatre (18 Colonel Glenn Plaza Drive). Following the screening, Pledger will discuss her role in the project and answer questions from the audience. Also scheduled to attend is the film's lead actor, 17-year old Chris Massoglia.

Immediately following the screening, from 9:00 to 11:00 pm, Copeland's Famous New Orleans Restaurant and Bar (2602 South Shackleford Road, Ste. 100) will host an after-event reception.

Tickets, which include the screening at Rave and the after-event at Copeland's, are $20 and must be purchased in advance by clicking here. Tickets will be mailed up until a week before the event and picked up at the Chamber thereafter.

The Arkansas Film Series is powered by Create Little Rock, a new Chamber group initiated to retain, develop and attract a talented, creative and competitive workforce to enhance the economic development of the Little Rock region.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend (Josh Hutcherson), got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That's the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley(John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what's left of his humanity.

The film is rated PG-13.

Executive Producer Courtney Pledger was born in Little Rock, but grew up mostly in Jackson, Mississippi. Her parents, Arkansas natives, returned to Little Rock when she was enrolled at Millsaps College. In August of 2004, Pledger relocated with her three children back to Little Rock from London. In August of this year, she became the senior vice president of production for Radical Publishing/Radical Pictures in Los Angeles.

Pledger is a producer of Ricky Gervais' Flanimals and The Night Tourist. Among her other projects are a film adaptation of John Masefield’s The Box of Delights, which has Mike Newell attached to direct for Brilliant Films and Boo U, a Tony Leondis-directed feature for DreamWorks Animation.

17-year old Chris Massoglia is one of the young Hollywood stars to watch. Born March 29, 1992 in Minneapolis, he played Elliot Plumm in A Plumm Summer alongside Henry Winkler, William Baldwin and Jeff Daniels. Next up, he stars as Dane Thompson in Joe Dante's The Hole 3-D, winner of this year's Best 3-D Film at the Venice Film Festival. The oldest of four children, Chris began his career on television's Law and Order, Boys Life and Wanted. He played in the 2004 Little League World Series Midwestern Regional Championship.

All proceeds of the Arkansas Film Series benefit efforts to retain, expand and attract film and content development in the region and state.

New LRFF website

I hope you got to this blog through the newly updated Little Rock Film Festival website but in case you didn't go here. The website was retooled for better navigation and content. I personally love it and thinks it gives the festival a modern personality the old one lacked.

There's also a big banner for those who want to submit their films for the upcoming 2010 festival. So get those films in and look over the new site.

Bells were Ringing

A super big congratulations to Jack and Libby Lofton who were married over the weekend in a beautiful ceremony at St. Edward's Cathedral. You couldn't ask for two better people who are perfect for each other. Jack, of course is the festival's Executive Director and we hope the both of them are having a great time in Mexico.

If you guys get a chance to see Guillermo del Torro give him my number.

Poster art for "The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Hi-Def Event."

Bloody Cars and Adventure at UCA

The award winning short film The Adventure is being shown tonight at UCA as a part of their artists in residence program with Mike Brune. The Georgia born filmmaker will be in attendance tonight as well as tomorrow for a screening of the cult film hit Blood Car. "What's it about" you say? It's in the title: a car that runs off blood!

It should be a fun night and I know Mike Gunter is pals with the filmmaker and he can vouch for Mr. Brune being a standup guy and filmmaker. Come out to Stanley Russ Hall Room 103 at 6 pm tonight for The Adventure and 7:30 tomorrow (Thursday) for Blood Car.

Fashionable Film Fest Worker

Vone Nantharangsy loves vintage clothes and owns a shop in the Midtowne Antique Mall called the Underground Socialite.

Our beloved Vone Nantharangsy is finally getting some credit for her wonderful creations and finds as the designer and creator of a host of vintage fashion styles at Underground Socialite. Sync Weekly did a fine article on her called "Signature Style" in the new release.

Vone is one of the hardest working festival coordinator's I've ever seen. She's a nonstop organizing machine but she still makes time during the festival to make everyone feel special. So do her a favor and stop by her shop at the Midtowne Antique Mall at Rodney Parham and Markham and pick up a 1930s hat or sweet pair of vintage shoes. Oh and read the article in Sync.

The Rock Men Cometh

I apologize for the lack of entries. We haven't neglected you! It's been a slow week of news and a busy week for me moving and all. We know everybody had fun at the Anvil shows, well now is your chance to see some other rock gods: Kiss.

According to their website tickets aren't on-sale yet but the date is set for October 29th, 2009 at Verizon Arena. Should be a fun event.

And if you haven't seen Anvil: The Story of Anvil track it down and watch it. Metal on Metal baby.

David Lynch in Arkansas Sort of

I caught a blurb on the Rock Candy blog about revered filmmaker David Lynch's interview project hitting up three people from Arkansas. While I doubt Lynch was anywhere near here he is the presenter of this road-trip style interview documentary that travels the US to interview waitresses, lawn care artists, vagabonds and much more.
Lynch boasts the project took place over 20,000 miles during 70 days. Fans of Lynch's more surrealist works such as Eraserhead or Mullholland Drive might not dig it but if
you're into minimalist This American Life type settings and slice of life brilliance and subtlety you will surely find this experiment fascinating.

Definitely be sure to check out the three spots in Arkansas: Hank (Harrison), Joe Bratton (Leslie), and Anthony (Dumas).

I think each video is a work of art. I'd be interested to know what everyone else thinks.
